Poker variants

There are several poker variants played world over, even though the vast majority of first time players and beginners doesn’t really know of anything else besides Texas Holdem. These poker variants mostly surfaced in the U.S. around the mid 1900s, and some of them were more popular than Texas Holdem until not too long ago.

Even though online poker is mainly about Holdem, you will find other variants playable as well (finding opponents at those tables though is a different matter). Poker variants such as Omaha Hi, Omaha Hi-lo, Razz, Pineapple and 7-card Stud are still popular in casinos. Even the world’s biggest live poker events feature such variants.

Many of these variants use different hand values (some value low hands better than high ones) a different number of betting rounds, and a different order of play.

Poker variants can be divided into three main categories:

-         Community card poker ( like Texas Holdem, Omaha etc)

-         Stud Poker (7-Card Stud, 5-Card Stud etc.)

-         Draw Poker (5-Card Draw)

Community Card Poker games became popular during the Second World War. These games feature a set of cards which are laid out on a table, in plain view, cards which can be used by all the players as part of their hand. They’re all dealt incomplete hands at the beginning of the game.

Stud Poker games are non-positional poker games, in which players use a combination of face up and face down cards. The origins of these games can be traced back all the way to the American Civil War.

In Draw Poker, players get full poker hands from the beginning. They can later improve their hands by exchanging cards which they deem useless.
