If you ever intend to give yourself a chance at becoming a winner in poker, before you do anything, you need to take the time to understand the nature of the game.

The lucky rookie will soon find himself depleted and disillusioned. It’s inevitable. Beating this game in the long-run, where it truly matters requires some serious skill.
Winning has nothing to do with taking down huge pots on marginal hands time after time. Winning in Holdem feels a lot like losing. One needs to apply a few small edges time and time again, and stick to good old reasonable play. Winning Holdem is a lot like a day-job. One needs to put in the hours and reap the meager benefits at the end of it all.
