How to be a winner in online poker

If you ever intend to give yourself a chance at becoming a winner in poker, before you do anything, you need to take the time to understand the nature of the game.

You see, many of the edges you need in order to be successful don’t really have anything to do with being at the table at all.

If you just burst into the poker room, hurriedly find yourself a table with a free seat and begin playing like a lunatic (after all, you know all the rules and what more could there be to it?) you’re not doing the right thing.

The real problems come about if you get lucky and win big on an approach like that. That’ll make you feel invincible and unbeatable, and it will also cause you to completely miss the whole point of the game. Texas Holdem offers rookies a more than fair chance when going up against experienced players. That’s the nature of the game, you can’t change it. Getting lucky in the short-term doesn’t require any special abilities, however, beating Holdem in the long-run is an altogether different deal.

Good players know there’s little value in short-term variance and they’ll do nothing to stop raving rookies from having the time of their life. Apparently, they won’t. In reality though, these guys know all too well that what comes around goes around.

The lucky rookie will soon find himself depleted and disillusioned. It’s inevitable. Beating this game in the long-run, where it truly matters requires some serious skill.

Winning has nothing to do with taking down huge pots on marginal hands time after time. Winning in Holdem feels a lot like losing. One needs to apply a few small edges time and time again, and stick to good old reasonable play. Winning Holdem is a lot like a day-job. One needs to put in the hours and reap the meager benefits at the end of it all.
